Vestibulocerebellum

Aka

flocculonodular lobe

archicerebellum

Located in

cerebellum

Consists of

cerebellar flocculus

cerebellar nodulus

Purkinje cells

Input from

directly from primary vestibular afferents, e.g. semi-circular canals and otolith organs

vestibular nuclei

mossy fibers from superior colliculus and V1 (via the pontine nuclei)

Sends to

inhibit lateral vestibular nuclei > vestibulospinal tract

otherwise all cerebellar outputs come from deep cerebellar nuclei

Function

regulates balance and eye movements

Mechanism

most primitive part of cerebellum

appears first in fishes

feedback loop with vestibular nuclei

lesions -> motor symptoms that look like drunkenness
